Design a program to benefit your selected community based upon the demographic information you found on the census sites as well as from the community web pages. It should not be an actual program that the local library does. However, if you are doing something like Story Time for Toddlers, something most public libraries do, you will make it a program of your own design. You are designing a program that can be a stand-alone (single time) or one that is ongoing (movie series, seasonal storytime, etc.). If you are actually working in a library, go ahead and plan something you could potentially use. Points will be given as follows.
1. Title of Program (make it inviting, descriptive, and clever)
2. Days of week Will it be every Friday? If so, list actual dates that it would run (see #4).
3. Time of day (actual time)
4. Specific dates (remember to think about other activities in your community, on TV, or in the world that may conflict. (Month and day of month.)
5. Examples: for teens, Confirmation or school activities; on TV, the World Series or Academy Awards)
6. Minimum to Maximum number of participants to make it reasonable to run the program
7. Characteristics of the population served. For whom is the program intended? (ages, sex, etc.)
8. Purpose of the Program. What demographic need have you identified that this program is attempting to meet? What are the potential benefits to the community?
9. How does the program fit in with the library's mission statement?
10. Number of staff members needed to successfully run the program
11. Specific location (room in library, nursing home, park district, etc.)
12. Program Cost breakdown (specify your own budget). You may assume that the library collection will be used, but don't depend upon interlibrary loans to arrive on time for all people. Therefore you may want to order special materials as needed. You may also assume that salaries, art materials (colored paper, paste, scissors), and copies of flyers/publicity will be provided by the library. Include anything special such as costumes, puppets, rental of equipment, speaker's or storyteller's fees must be provided in the budget.
13. Describe the program. If the program is on ongoing one, describe what will be done at each session. Be as detailed as possible. Will you have handouts or refreshments?
