Case study 1.

The home health nurse visits a 62-year-old Hispanic woman who has had diabetes mellitus for 20 years and currently has a sore on her left foot. She has missed two doctors appointments and has been soaking her foot in warm salt water every night. She speaks English, enjoys cooking and eating Mexican food and does not like to ask for any assistance. During the home visit, the nurse notices several religious items as well as many family pictures throughout the house.

Mary Martin a 67 year old woman of Native American decent is admitted to the hospital with increased fatigue, lethargy, and occasional confusion from End Stage Renal Disease. Mary has a long history of Hypertension resulting in permanent damage to her kidneys. Mary has gained 5 lbs in the past two days prior to admission. Mary speaks broken English and you find out from her daughter that she stopped taking her blood pressure medication months ago when she found a new mixture of herbs to help lower her blood pressure. Mary is worried when the doctor speaks with her about dialysis since her kidneys aren't working correctly and her daughter asks if that is something she can do at home since she does not like to travel much. Mary has had many visitors during her hospital stay.
