Your Communication Skills Inventory and Improvement Plan
Successful professionals in the health and wellness industry understand the value of effective communication skills; these skills help their clients, which leads to good business. Therefore, the most successful professionals identify what characteristics in their communication style are already strong and what skills need development. They identify, for example, how employing strong skills in listening, using conscientious body language, and providing clear instructions can affect their rapport with clients positively. They acknowledge how interrupting, being distracted, and speaking in a sloppy manner, for example, diminish rapport with clients. To develop a better rapport with clients and to improve health outcomes, conscientious health professionals pay attention to how they communicate and they use strategies to help them to improve.
This writing assignment has you developing a communication skills inventory and improvement plan. Through this inventory, you will identify communication skills you have that are strong. You will identify communication skills you have that are weak. You will provide concrete examples of these strengths and weaknesses and discuss their effects on your relationships with clients and co-workers. You will identify specific strategies that you could use to improve communication skills that you have identified as weak.
Your focus must be on communication skills. Volunteer and work experience, as well as education, are not up for discussion. You are going to discuss what are often called the soft skills - almost all of these are connected to communication style. These skills include listening skills, organizational skills, speaking skills, and awareness of body language. They also include cultural sensitivity, conflict management skills, diplomacy, assertiveness, the ability to work on a team, and adaptability.
Here are the content and organizational points that your assignment must address:
- Identify two communication strengths and one communication weakness that you have. You'll have three paragraphs in total, each with its own focus.
- You may wish to refer back to your brainstorming mind map from Week 5 for ideas on communication skills you have or would like to improve.
- Through structured, unified, coherent paragraphs, provide concrete examples of the strengths and the weakness. Illustrate how they help or hinder you at work or school and why. Discuss the effects of the strengths and weakness. Here you are drawing from actual experience. Do not talk about hypothetical situations.
- Use the point-proof-comment pattern to incorporate research into this discussion (for each paragraph). The research must come from academic research articles. Information from commercial websites and social media platforms will not meet the research requirement.
- Any quotation, paraphrase, or summary included in the paragraphs MUST be cited in APA 7th edition style. A corresponding reference for each citation will be listed alphabetically on the reference page, which will also be organized in APA 7th edition style.
- Use a new mind map to demonstrate your brainstorming for this assignment. Use colours, connections, branches, and notes to show your thinking and planning.
To meet the content and organizational expectations of this assignment, expect to write three structured, unified, and coherent paragraphs, each about 200 words (one paragraph per skill).
