MATLAB Project

You are expected to develop your own MATLAB code for this project. Teamwork is unacceptable however you can discuss process with other students. You are not to compare your code or results with other students. If you have questions about MATLAB please go to either Dr. Reeves web page or Google.

Project:

1. Design parameters will be based on the last four digits of your student ID. For example ID = xxx3806. For the purpose of this document, test digits will be referenced as ID1, ID2 , ID3, and ID4 . Your student ID should be at the top of your code.

2. Common design parameters
a. Frequency = 3965 kHz
b. Angular Steps can be no larger than 0.25 degrees
c. Far-field condition is assumed true in all cases
d. We will only consider radiation patterns in the x-y plane.

3. Type of antennas: Each ID digit will give the antenna type for each of four antennas:
a. For ID digits with values 0 to 4, the antenna will be a Hertzian dipole l  = λ/20
b. For ID digits with values 5 to 9, the antenna will be a half-wave dipole.

4. Spatial position (center feed point) in meters
a. Note: ID digits with a value of zero ‘0' will be changed to a value of ‘10'.
b. Antenna 1: (10) ID1ax + (10) ID1ay
c. Antenna 2: (10) ID2ax + (-10) ID2ay
d. Antenna 3: (-10) ID3ax + (-10) ID3ay
e. Antenna 4: (-10) ID4ax + (10) ID4ay

5. Orientation
a. Odd value ID digits will result in an ‘x' direction orientation.
b. Even value ID digits (including zero) will result in a ‘y' direction orientation.

6. Drive Currents
a. Note: ID digits with a value of zero will be changed to a value of ‘10'.
b. The currents for each antenna will be the ID digit value in amps.
c. For the example case:
i. Antenna 1: 3 Amps
ii. Antenna 2: 8 Amps
iii. Antenna 3: 10 Amps
iv. Antenna 4: 6 Amps

Submission:

1. A well written document that is free from any form of internet (or other) plagiarism. Document will describe how you developed the code including all requested figures, tables and the code itself.

2. Your code WITH DETAILED COMMENTS. (the following three options should be selectable when I run your code using a switch statement)
a. Plot of the net power pattern in the x-y plane (Add plot to report)
b. Find the total radiated power and radiation resistance for each antenna as well as the total power radiated by all antennas (in watts) (create a table) (must be solved with MATLAB)
c. The E-field magnitude and phase angle at any given point in the x-y plane (input from prompter). This point will not be directly on top of any antenna and will be sufficiently far from the origin such that the change in theta from one antenna to the next will be negligible.

3. Comment your code clearly. Poorly commented code will result in an automatic loss of 20% points.

Hints:

1. Be careful with the conventions and orientation of θ given the changing orientations from one
antenna to another.
2. Be careful when changing coordinate systems.
3. Phase terms cannot be neglected.
4. Since the fields and power patterns are defined as θ from 0 to Π and Φ from 0 to 2*Π, and I am asking you to plot the net power pattern for θ = 0 to 2*pi, you will have to take the absolute value of the pattern factor part of the H field (or E field) for both antennas.
