The term "human factors" has grown increasingly popular as the commercial aviation industry has realized that human error, rather than mechanical failure, underlies most aviation accidents and incidents. While most managers would point to training to avoid accidents, I would look more into integrating human factors into the design of the airplanes to reduce aviation accidents. The three areas that I would look to improve are flight deck design and error management Flight deck design: Over the past several decades, safer and more reliable designs have been responsible for much of the progress made in reducing the accident rate and increasing efficiency. My new design would key in the following past operational experience, operational objectives, and scientific knowledge. The reason I would choose these is that the list above is human factor design requirements. Error management: Failure to follow procedures is not uncommon in incidents and accidents related to both flight operations and maintenance procedures. However, most in the airline industry lack the insight to why such errors occur. To limit such error, I would use two tools called procedural even analysis tool and maintenance error decision aid. The procedural analysis tool will focus on procedural related incidents, while the maintenance error decision aid will help reduce common human errors caused from maintenance. anything else to contribute?
