"Organizational culture can be defined as the values, beliefs or behaviors that are displayed within a particular organization" (Grand Canyon University, 2018). The culture of an organizations sets the mannerisms and attitudes that are demonstrated in an organization. Shared values between an employee and employer will allow for positive outcomes. But on the other hand, there can be a few barriers within an organizational culture that can cause nurse leaders to feel powerless. Loyalty within the organization can play a role in nurse leaders feeling powerless. If senior management does not trust a nurse leader or the senior manager is disloyal to the leader then the organizational culture is jeopardized. Another barrier in organizational culture that can cause nurse leaders to feel powerless is trust. If the leader is not trusted by others, the organizational culture is endangered. This can cause negative outcomes for patients as well. "Conversely, a ward or unit where the healthcare staff feel powerless or frightened to speak out can lead to them abandoning their professional values and conforming to the negative culture, taking sick leave or ultimately leaving the profession" (Nightingale, 2018). The culture of an organization influences the acts and ways employees behave. Nurse leaders need to lead by example and display adequate values and behaviors to positively affect their employees.
