Question: This case study can be examined though the lens of care ethics, care ethics emphasizes how emotions are regarded as a crucial source of building and supporting care (Ley, 2023). Care ethics also argues the value of sensitivity and concerns for one's needs. In this case, we could say Kathy acted unethically by not valuing the empathetic standpoint in terms of caring for her patients safely. If Kathy acted ethically according to care ethics, she would have prioritized the well-being of her patients, and distance herself from situations where she could jeopardize the safety of other's.
The medication error could be linked to her intoxication; in this scenario, I would consider Kathy being negligent since this caused non-intentional harm to a patient. The nurse's should have blown the whistle on Kathy considering this may have detrimental outcomes to patients. As stated in CNO principle 6.4, nurses are obligated to report unsafe behaviour or unethical conduct (CNO, 2023). In this case Kathy was unfit to practice and did not meet the standards of practice or values from the code of ethics, therefore the nurses are obligated to report this. Whistleblowing in this scenario also aligns with care ethics, as nurses should report Kathy due to the potential harm she may cause to patients, rooted from empathetic concern for their well-being.
