Assignment - Comment on Nursing SWOT Analysis Discussion
A SWOT analysis is a useful tool that provides programs and organizations with a simple map of internal and external factors that may help or harm a project. A SWOT template is created by listing an organization or project's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. A SWOT analysis is beneficial for analyzing a program, or organization's chances for success based on a variety of factors that are present (Minnesota Department of Health, n.d.). Although the SWOT was developed for business and industry, it can be used in numerous settings, including community healthcare to become fully aware of situations that help or hinder progress and aid in strategic planning and decision-making (Community Tool Box, 2022).
Positive influences, or impact include strengths, such as resources and characteristics of an organization that will contribute to its success; and external opportunities, including socio-economic, political, cultural, technological factors, or catering to unmet needs of clients being served (Minnesota Department of Health, n.d.). Conversely, negative impacts such as weakness and threats internally and externally can compromise the success of organizations and programs. Internal factors include undesirable characteristics of an organization, and unwillingness or lack of success at addressing past failures from reaching goals. One weakness that can compromise the success of patient outcomes is that there is not a dedicated nursing team that conducts extensive follow-up with discharged individuals to ensure that they are being compliant with their care at home and in the community. Individuals who are non-compliant are likely to be re-admitted in the future in the acute care setting. External threats can also be due to socio-economic (e.g., lack of funding from donors, or economic downturn), cultural, political (e.g., legislation that makes one's work more difficult), or technological setback (Community Tool Box, 2022; Minnesota Department of Health, n.d.).
