Question

European colonialism significantly transformed the human geography of the African continent. Colonial settlers and authorities sought to reorganize existing landscapes to conform to their radicalized imaginaries, desires for economic extraction, and administrative needs. In doing so, they both relied on and conflicted with Africans who bought to the colonial relationship their own understandings and uses of space and place. Such a context often allowed for African groups and individuals to exercise significant agency even while constraining their influence. Describe some of the ways in which African groups or individuals actively shape the construction of colonial space though their work, knowledge and cooperation, or resistance. Did such African actions reinforce or undermine colonial authority?
