Colonialism shaped the history of many countries from the fifteenth to the twentieth century. The colonial powers sought new markets and resources. 90% of the indigenous population in the Americas were killed off through disease and warfare while other colonized areas had Western economic interests imposed onto them. 12 million Africans were also enslaved and sent to the Americas to work. The legacy still affects politics from the imposed legal systems and political administrations. Upon decolonization, new nations were weak with untested political structures. Nationalist and liberation movements in places such as Vietnam and Mozambique shape the character of the nation (Handelman, 2019). The effects vary from country to country but leave a more negative lasting mark overall than a positive one.
