Mr. Hart is a 75-year-old man who developed left lower quadrant pain gradually throughout the day yesterday. He came to the E.R. as it became more severe, and he developed nausea and vomiting. Before coming to the hospital, he also had diarrhea. The pain was sharp and unrelenting. The patient rated his pain 9 on a 0-10 scale. He was pale and his temperature was 38.5 degrees Celsius. His abdomen was firm and distended with rebound tenderness and no bowel sounds present. He was found to have a perforated diverticulum on Xray and was taken to the OR for a colon resection and placement of a transverse colostomy.
