Emmanuel has worked for Company CDE, as the Director of Marketing, for seven years. He manages 10 leaders, who each manage teams of 50 employees. Essentially, Emmanuel is responsible for directing and managing 500 employees with the support of his team managers.
Marianna has worked for Company CDE, as the Director of Operations, for five years. She manages 15 leaders, who each manage teams of 10 employees. Essentially, Marianna is responsible for directing and managing 150 employees with the support of her team managers.
Emmanuel and Marianna both employ unique leadership styles. Emmanuel uses a hands-on approach to manage his team and is often viewed as a leader who prefers collaboration, teamwork, and communication. Marianna is viewed as a hands-off leader. She prefers working independently, enjoys autonomy, and empowers her employees through providing detailed feedback (when necessary).
Unfortunately, these two leaders have experienced issues with their teams, as of recently. Emmanuel's team has expressed, in his 360-degree review feedback, that he is often overpowering, conducts meaningless meetings, and tries to implement teamwork when it is not needed. Marianna's team, during a face-to-face discussion with the Chief Financial Officer, noted that she embodies a laissez-faire leadership approach and often shuts her door, thereby preventing collaboration.
Marianna and Emmanuel are confused and feel attacked by the feedback that they have been offered. Both leaders want to attain additional information about how they can make improvements. However, they also recognize that they need to be careful with how they gather additional information related to their performance.
