A marathon runner is halfway through the race when she collapses mid-stride. Upon reviewing a blood test result it is observed that the runner has high levels of erythropoietin (EPO), needle marks on her arm, and a vial of EPO in her locker. Further diagnosis reveals that she has suffered a stroke due to high blood viscosity. Explain how high EPO can cause a stroke.
