Although taking classes online has become progressively popular over time, it has been more popular among people who furthered their education for a bachelor's or master's degree. With online learning, these individuals can have a full-time job yet balance their home life and education as well with a convenient schedule that works for them (Smith & Brame, 2014). Additionally, online classes give individuals to have more of a voice compared to in-person learning. Two methods that are very important to benefit students with online classes are immediate feedback and both collaborative and interactive learning.
The reason collaborative and interactive learning is important is because instead of the student working individually on their work, they have the opportunity to discuss topics amongst their classmates and have the opportunity to respond to one another (it helps out people who are introverted in face-to-face settings) (Smith & Brame, 2014). Students working together can also help students know how to avoid the replication crisis. The replication crisis is a topic that needs to be addressed more in the scientific field because a lot of results are not double-checked for the reliability of the study questions (Diener & Biswas-Diener, 2022). With the material that is published in the psychology field, it is important to replicate the study to protect it against false positives or fake data being publicized incorrectly (Diener & Biswas-Diener, 2022). Through interactive learning for individuals who are shy, a group setting online allows them to have more of a voice without feeling intimidation. It helps them get a better grasp of the learning in collaborating with classmates. There is also a peer system that would keep students from using false data and creating false positives.
Immediate feedback from the instructor or other classmates is also very important because it allows them to have that open communication in the learning process and is beneficial to answer questions on something they are not aware of (Smith & Brame, 2014). The feedback can also help a student immediately fix problems that may occur in the replication process. Replicating data helps prove the correlation or relationship of data based on the causation from the study (Diener & Biswas-Diener, 2022). If a student accidentally used the wrong information while replicating a study, their peers or instructor could help fix the problem by providing critical feedback.
Increasing the awareness of students who study online about the replication crisis allows them to have more topics of active learning and collaboration amongst one another. It also allows them to be very analytical when doing research or projects, and to be mindful of false positives in research. When students are doing research online it can be easier for them to consult with one another on different articles whether they think it is false or replication has been done on a study to verify results. Being able to collaborate increases the knowledge of the students to work together and feedback from one another.
