Case Study Claire
She has been admitted to the hospital for a double mastectomy due to her recent breast cancer diagnosis. Claire and her family remain unclear about her prognosis and may be best served through an interdisciplinary team.
Claire has a high-deductible health insurance plan through her employment. However, the plan does not cover some of the treatments that are recommended following the surgery. Claire also will not be able to continue employment as she recovers, and her job does not offer short-term disability coverage. She is unsure whether her health insurance policy will lapse when she takes time off work to recover.
In talking with her family, as well as a plastic surgeon and other professionals, Claire has decided to get reconstructive surgery after the mastectomy; prior to that, she would like to wear a prosthesis and mastectomy bra. Her health insurance does not cover the bra.
