COIT20264 Network Design Written Assessment (HT2, 2019) - CQ University, Australia

Objectives - This assessment task relates to Unit Learning Outcomes 3 to 5 and can be undertaken in a group of up to 4 students or individually. Distance students can form groups with on-campus students as well. In this assessment task, you will complete your final network design report for the scenario given on page 3 based on the feedback you received on your Assessment Item 1 report. You are also expected to contribute to the Group Discussion Forum in Moodle by finding the answers to the recommended weekly group discussion questions.

Assessment Task - Starting from the logical network design that you completed in Assessment Item 1, you are required to undertake the physical design of the network taking into consideration the feedback that you received on your Assessment Item 1 report. You are also required to complete your final network design report.

Your report should include the following:

1. Executive Summary

2. Table of Contents

3. Project Goal

4. Project Scope

5. Business Goals and Constraints

6. Technical Goals and Tradeoffs

7. Table of User Communities, Data Stores, Network Applications and Traffic Flows

8. The explanation and justification of your logical network design

9. The logical network diagram(s) including addressing and naming

10. The list of routing and switching protocols, and security mechanisms

11. The physical network diagram

12. The table of networking & communication devices and applications required, including the cost of each of them, the IP addresses, the product numbers as well as the approximate total cost

13. The explanation and justification of the networking & communication devices and applications required (as mentioned in 12 above)

14. A test plan that can be used to test the new network

15. One detailed test script for your test plan

Note: You must follow the Harvard citation and referencing guidelines when writing your report.

Assessment Criteria -

In this assessment task, you are assessed on your ability to undertake the design of a network containing logical and physical designs for the given scenario using the top-down network design methodology, and prepare a complete report of your design.

You need to familiarise yourself with the marking criteria to ensure that you have addressed them when preparing your logical network design report.

The Scenario for Network Design Assessment Tasks -

Your company in Australia specialises in designing networks for local and international clients. Its new project is to design an enterprise network for a chain of medical centres of Utopimed located in the capital cities of all Australian states. Utopimed is managed from the medical centre in Melbourne.

Each medical centre has 10 chambers for GPs and 10 chambers for specialists so that a maximum of 20 doctors can see patients at a time. All chambers should be equipped with computers connected to the enterprise network of Utopimed. In addition, there will be exercise treadmills, blood pressure monitors, ICU bedside monitors, blood sugar monitors in the chambers of specialists that will wirelessly send the data of the patients through the enterprise network. Each medical centre has a reception, a laboratory, a room for the visiting management and a radiology unit as well. The reception should have a photocopying machine, 3 computers and 3 telephones to take the appointments of patients. Laboratory staff will undertake most of the tests and produce results in-house, and rarely the specimens will have to be sent to a third party lab. The laboratory staffs upload the reports into the system, and the doctors can see them instantly. The third party labs can also upload reports directly into Utopimed's system. The room for the visiting management has a computer and a telephone connected to the enterprise network. Each radiology unit will have one unit from each of X-ray, Ultrasound, MRI and CT scan machines. All these machines should also be connected to the network where possible, so that all reports can be seen by the patient's doctor/specialist immediately. More importantly, all current and past data of each patient will be analysed on the go by an intelligent software and the likely causes of the ailment will be suggested to the doctor. This will help the doctors to treat their patients faster and better.

In the waiting area of patients, the patients should be able to use their mobile devices by connecting to the free Wi-Fi network of Utopimed. This service can be used by them to connect to the Internet as well as to request and receive medical certificates from the doctor. Doctors do not issue or sign the medical certificates directly but the system does it automatically.

In addition to the abovementioned features that every medical centre of Utopimed has, the Melbourne medical centre has the managing director, an accountant, a secretary and an IT manager. They are located in an open office and they should be provided with a computer and a telephone for each, and a photocopying/printing machine common to all. Because of the high confidentiality, integrity and accountability (CIA) of patients' records, the managing director does not support a cloud-based solution.

Using the top-down network design methodology, you are to design the enterprise network of Utopimed. Wherever possible, you should find all medical equipment which can be networked. There is no need to make any assumptions to design the network for Utopimed and any such attempts are discouraged. Each step of your network design should clearly explain and justify how you satisfy the business and technical goals.

Note: This scenario was created by Dr Rohan de Silva on 05th June 2019.
