Working memory is a cognitive system with a limited capacity that can hold information temporarily. Working memory is important for reasoning and the guidance of decision-making and behavior. An example of working memory is holding a person's address in mind while listening to instructions to get there. Working memory is used every day; to read, to follow multi-step directions or to do working math.

The following are examples of working memory not at its best:

  • You want to join in a conversation but by the time the other person stops talking, you forget what you wanted to say.
  • You lose your keys, cell phone or wallet.
  • You have many unfinished projects because you become distracted and forgot the first project.
  • You arrive at a staff meeting and listen to introductions but by the time you hear the third introduction, you have forgotten who came before them.

Step one:

  • In groups choose one scenario and as a group think of one strategy you would offer to one of the above situations.

Step two:

  • In groups create a different memory strategy technique that you could teach to the rest of the class.

Step three:

  • In groups discuss how you could adapt one of your memory tips for a specific population of people: examples are children with autism, youth with English as a second language etc.
