Question

Cognitive and physical changes of a dying patient include changes in the mental state. They may be more fatigued and have episodes of falling asleep; they can be semi-comatose or fully comatose and can only hear up until close to death. Sensory changes occur, like visual and auditory. Both come in the form of hallucination, whether it may be thinking they saw something that wasn't there or heard a sound that nobody else did. Physical changes can come from having a minimal appetite at this point, usually near death; a patient sleeps a lot, so this can take away from eating, causing the patient to slim and lose body weight. Their bladder and bowel also become weaker. The grandmother would most likely receive hospice care because it is a multidisciplinary team approach that focuses on patient care and not curing the patient (Lally and Valentine-French, 2019). This is because during a time of death, especially after they have tried all they could as nurses and doctors, you want to make the patient comfortable, give reassurance, and reflect on life with them. They also help treat the pain that will occur up until death.
