Question: Acute dystonia is treated with Anti-cholinergic medication such as Cogentin and diphenhydramine are a treatment minimize EPS symptoms Other Antimuscarinic agents or anticholinergic medications such as benztropine can help also with EPS symptoms Beta Blockers are best treatment for akathisia though sometimes benzodiazepines can be used also. You could use the Barnes akathisia scale to assess the severity of drug-induced akathisia so know how to treat. Tardive dyskinesia can be treated with benzodiazepines Try dose reduction if the antipsychotic is working but patient is experiencing EPS symptoms and if that doesn't work you can try switching antipsychotic medications with a lower risk for EPS, ( such as moving from a first generation typical antipsychotic to a second generation atypical antipsychotic).
