Personal Data
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 protect the rights of individuals when you process personal data about them, including obtaining, holding and destroying it.
Personal data is complex, but it is safest to assume that all information about a living, identifiable individual is personal data. This includes any expression of opinion by or about the individual. In this assignment you are using personal data to demonstrate research competence in the gathering, reporting and analysing of data.
Gathering Personal Data
1. In your survey, carefully consider what personal data you need to collect - and do NOT collect any data that would directly identify an individual - for example - do not collect name, date of birth, place of birth (except maybe country). ONLY collect data that is associated with your research question or research hypothesis.
2. Ensure that your survey is set to be anonymous, so that it does not gather the participants' names.
3. Data has to be gathered with consent. We will assume consent within the CO4820 cohort during data collection. You MUST NOT go outside this group to gather data as they will not have consented to participate. We will also assume that students with this group do not count as vulnerable individuals.
4. Use a secure portal to gather data - forms must be created in Microsoft Forms so that data is stored on the university servers.
Reporting Data
5. You are only allowed to share this data with the module instructors via a report that you will write (as a paper) and will submit to the UCLan Blackboard page.
6. When reporting data, it must be IMPOSSIBLE to identify from whom it came. If there is identifying data associated with, for example, survey forms - this MUST NOT be reported.
7. You MUST ensure that all personal data, especially opinions, is recorded accurately. You must not change any data to suit your own ends.
Storing and Destroying Data
8. If someone fills in your survey and then asks for the data to be deleted, you must respect that request and do the best you can to locate and delete that data. Participants should understand that it may be difficult to do this if the survey is anonymous.
9. Ensure that the data you have collected is kept in a secure location (within Microsoft Forms or on the UCLan OneDrive for example). Do not store copies on unsecure devices. You may not transfer any personal data outside the UK.
10. Securely destroy personal data when it is no longer needed - in this case we recommend you keep anonymised data until you have been awarded a pass grade for this module and any summarised data, such as will be described in the assignment submission, until your MSc grade has been confirmed.
