Description of Assessment Task and Purpose:
Data analysis and visualisation are the art and skill of transforming raw data into meaningful and useful information. This skill transcends nearly all disciplines, businesses, and industries. Within the field of cybersecurity data analysis can be used to identify threats, risks, and incidents, helping businesses become safer and less vulnerable to cyber attacks.
Choose a dataset from a network domain of interest to you like fraud, health attacks, banking, malware, defence, etc and carry out a range of data analytics to produce insights through generating visualisation showing features such as cluster, patterns, anomalies, etc.
You have the freedom to choose the data analytics and visualisation tool or environment from those approved and offered by the University of Lincoln.
Document your findings and approach in a report written to address the following requirements:
1. Description of the domain dataset and cyber or network problems or challenges within it. This needs to be supported through evidence from a literature search.
2. An outline and rationale for the data analytic techniques you are proposing to deploy to gain the insight from the dataset.
3. Produce a set of high quality visualisations through the application of the data analytics techniques you have identified relevant to the domain.
4. Explain the results and identify any insights that you have gleaned from the exercise. This should be written to show how the concerned organisation could enhance its cyber security measures to avoid future problems. Emphasis on ethical and legal constraints are to be taken into account and highlighted.
Learning Outcome 1: critically evaluate network security
Learning Outcome 2: undertake diagnostics to evaluate the impact of attacks
Learning Outcome 3: critique measures designed to mitigate cyber security attacks
Learning Outcome 4: review and critique cyber security processes
Learning Outcome 5: examine suitable strategies, policies and approaches in view of the legal, ethical and professional issues
Knowledge & Skills Assessed:
Ability to analyse and evaluate a range of technologies and platforms and produce a solution that matches the problem in hand.
Good use of referencing.
Writing well structured, clear, and engaging reports.
