A significant proportion of the practical work for the module will entail use of Amazon Web Services (AWS). To start to prime you for upcoming individual and group project work with AWS, you should carry out the following initial familiarisation tasks:
1. Log on to AWS using the account information provided by your instructor and datasheet with AWS access instructions.
2. Review the basic, top-level, Cloud Management functions, options and key tools offered by AWS.
3. Record the number and types of EC2 instances currently running within the specified cloud environment.
4. Using the most appropriate interface(s), determine what types of cloud network infrastructure services are in use.
Provide a summary of your experiences accessing AWS and a summary of the functionality available.
Assignment 2-3
Assignment: Migrating part of a commercial organisation's legacy computing infrastructure to the cloud
You will submit this assignment in Week 3:
A private low-budget airline wishes to migrate its flight booking/passenger reservations sub-system currently held on the airline's in-house corporate servers to the cloud.
The planned migration has been prompted primarily by difficulties handling the spikes in flight bookings and passenger reservations during the summer and holiday periods, when there is elevated demand for flights.
You have been asked to provide general advice and guidance on the steps that need to be taken to successfully implement the cloud migration.
To prepare for this Assignment:
Carry out the following tasks -
1. Provide concise suggestions for cloud service(s) and deployment models. Also, indicate what standards should be considered for virtualisation and other aspects of cloud operations.
2. Map out, in outline form, the steps that you would expect to be taken to migrate the airline flight bookings sub-system to the cloud. The steps should make allowance for business continuity planning, as well as offer provisions for future business growth and disaster recovery contingency planning.
3. Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Services (GCS) are three well-known organisations that offer cloud solutions. Compare the cloud-related commercial offerings of these three companies, primarily in terms of functionality, performance, scalability, degree of standardisation, ease of use, costs and any other characteristics you find relevant. You should do this by accessing and reviewing the information available on their respective websites. Make a recommendation, on the basis of your comparative assessment, as to which of the three commercial cloud services offerings would be preferred for migrating the airline's legacy computer system to a cloud-based scheme.

Assignment: Developing and hosting a human resource management (HRM) applications suite on the AWS cloud
You will submit this assignment in Week 5.
A large government department wishes to develop an HRM Applications suite to be hosted on the AWS cloud.
The applications suite will comprise a mix of bespoke software developed to manage various HR functions e.g. employee data, job-related information and appraisals/performance data as well as self-service portlets for leave applications and promotion requests.
You have been asked to provide reasonably detailed advice for planning and scoping purposes for the cloud-based system to be developed.
To prepare for this Assignment:
Carry out the following tasks:
1. Explain, in some detail, which aspects of AWS would be relevant or influential for the planned cloud-based systems development. Structure your write-up here in terms of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) issues and considerations.
2. A key aspect of the work will involve designing systems for storing and manipulating structured (relational) and semi-structured (key value and document-oriented) data. Discuss which aspects of AWS could be used to support this aspect of the HRM applications development.
3. Dealing specifically with the development of online self-service portlets for the HRM application, outline the general scheme of work that would need to carried out with AWS to implement this. You should make reasonable assumptions pertaining to the type of application being developed and anticipated user requirements.

Assignment: Economic arguments for cloud services migration
Economic arguments for migrating corporate data centres and computing infrastructure to the cloud have often been quite persuasive. However, for large-scale business ventures and complex organisational scenarios, careful prior analysis, financial modelling and planning is often needed.
To prepare for this Assignment:
Carry out the following tasks:
1. Select any business sector in the country in which you currently reside, and present a reasonably detailed case, based mainly on economic grounds, for why large organisations in that sector would be better off relocating their IT systems to the cloud, fully or partially. Your write-up should be supported by factual data relevant to the selected business sector/country, and should include estimated cost savings, if any, for cloud migration of their IT systems, either fully or partially.
2. Are there any business-related, regulatory or other non-economic factors that could significantly affect the economic arguments you have put forward? For at least one of the factors mentioned, explain, and attempt to quantify in some detail, what effect this has on the economic arguments you presented for sub-task 1.
