Clotting blood can be both a positive and a negative, We usually see blood clotting after we have a cut on our body this is why cuts usually form scabs, however we can see blood clots in arteries which can be lethal. Three types of hemostatic mechanisms are Platelet plug formation, vascular spasm, and coagulation. A platelet plug is seen when vessels are broken. Saladin (2018) states that platelets adhere to the vessel that was broken as well as to other platelets, they then pull the vessel walls together and form a type of band aid for the broke vessel which stops minor bleeding. Vascular spasms are the first line of protection for blood loss. Vascular spasms causes the injured/ broken blood vessel to constrict due to pain receptors firing off, however the constriction only lasts a few minutes Saladin (2018) says that "injury to the smooth muscle of the blood vessel itself causes a longer lasting vasoconstriction". Vascular spasms last just long enough for platelet plug formation and coagulation to come into play. Lastly coagulation is the final step to stopping blood loss, and it is the most effective step. "Coagulation is one of the most complex process in the body, involving over 30 chemical reactions" Saladin (2018). Clotting disorders may not be super common, however they are around. Some factors that can cause clotting disorders can include Leukemia; which causes our platelet counts to lower, gallstones, and malnutrition. Hemophilia is one of the better-known clotting disorders; it causes a person to be unable to clot after an injury. It became prevalent in royal families. Hemophilia is a recessive gene and is mostly passed to males though their mothers. Thrombosis is another clotting disease; it causes unwanted clotting in unbroken blood vessels. Thrombosis can cause blockages in arteries, which can brake off, and travel into our heart and brain, which can cause strokes and heart attacks. These are just a few common blood disorders, and there are many more out there. Work Cited: Saladin, K. S., Gan, C. A., & Cushman, H. N. (2018).
