Question

Bicket et al (2021) performed a systemic review of randomized clinical trials for minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS). The summarized data was evaluated using the Cochrane reviews. The trials lasted 6-60 months and were studying how the use of MIGS for open-angle glaucoma was more beneficial than with cataract extraction alone. Other treatments studied were traditional glaucoma surgery, laser trabeculoplasty, or medical therapy. The participants who did not need medication to reduce their intraocular pressure (IOP) post-surgery (drop-free) were analyzed in short terms (<6 months) to medium terms (6-18 months) follow up. The conclusion based on the synthesized Cochrane reviews, some MIGS had greater drop-free disease control than cataract surgery alone. Adding an iStent was shown to improve drop-free disease control compared with utilizing cataract surgery. (Bicket et al., 2021).
