Assessment Task: Oral Presentation
Learning Outcome 1: Apply independent thought and rational inquiry in the search and critique of evidence relevant to a research question
Learning Outcome 2: Formulate research questions arising from clinical practice or concerning policy development
Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate understanding and application of the philosophical, methodological, and ethical dimensions of research activity
Learning Outcome 4: Identify common research methods and approaches and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these
Learning Outcome 5: Formulate appropriate research approaches and methodologies to address research questions
Learning Outcome 6: Analyse the implications of research findings on nursing practice, education and future research
Assessment Purpose:
During your professional career, you will attend conferences. These conferences will be convened by professional associations either in nursing or a speciality area. At these conferences there will be sessions
in which research and other quality improvement activities that are advancing the nursing profession will be presented. In turn, you will also have the opportunity to undertake projects and initiatives in your workplace or in further studies and might present this work at these conferences. This assessment mirrors a session at a conference. For this assessment task you'll attend a session where a small group of students will summarise their findings from Assessment 1 and present their idea for Assessment 3. You will receive feedback that will help you with your Assessment 3 and you'll learn from hearing the other presentations and the feedback they received.
For this assessment you will describe a clinical problem / issue and its significance to the nursing profession. State a research question that aligns with a recommended mnemonic for question formation. Your work on Assessment 1 will assist with these aspects of the task. You will then outline a research study method that would address the clinical question stated drawing upon the content covered during the lectures, workshops and from the LMS. You will communicate clearly to peers and academic staff. Finally, you will provide critical review and feedback to peer(s) on their presentation.
Task Description:
Each student is required to prepare and present a 5-minute oral presentation about their topic, research question and proposed methodology. In the presentation, students are required to:
Briefly describe the background to the research topic drawing upon the review of the literature
Identify the gap in the evidence/ knowledge.
State a research question use either PICO(T) or PEO/SPIDER framework
Outline the research method you propose to address the study question. Including:
Study approach/ paradigm AND design
Sample
Data and data collection methods
Data analysis
The schedule for presentation day will be confirmed at the beginning of semester.
During the session, you will be provided feedback from the session chair to help you develop your protocol to be submitted for Assessment 3.
During the session, you will provide constructive and professional feedback on the other presentations in the session.
In particular, you will be required to provide a peer review (approx. 250 words) of one other presentation during the day and provide written feedback within 24 hours of the session. You will be allocated the person you will be reviewing by the session chair. The allocation will occur at the start of the session. You are encouraged to ensure you set aside time within the 24 hours period to ensure you can complete this peer review. A word document based on the rubric is available for you to complete. You will need to complete the peer review form and upload it to your own LMS within 24 hours after the session. You are encouraged to bring your laptop computer, or similar device, to make notes to assist you to provide peer feedback. The provision of peer review is associated with marks on the rubric. Students that provide adequate peer review that meets standard and is on time will achieve the full 5 marks available for this criterion. Students that do not provide adequate peer review that does not meet standard or is not on time will receive 0 marks for this criterion.
Guidelines for preparing your presentation:
The presentation content should be clear and your presentation style should be clear, engaging and to time.
A suggested rule of thumb is 1 slide per minute (5-minute presentation = 5 slides)
Minimise the number of points per slide.
Minimise the number of colours used.
Minimise the number of fonts used.
