Question: Nursing informatics is made up of clinical nursing science and information technology, which often encompasses the management and support of information and data, as well as knowledge and wisdom. These areas of focus, while different from one another in many ways, will ultimately depend on each another in order to ensure that a health care informaticist or nurse is able to carry out their job's roles and responsibilities appropriately (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2021). According to Topaz (2013), data that derives from informatics can be utilized to produce both clinical understanding and knowledge, to which that information can then provide new interpretations of issues in the field of nursing. In applying this process in the health care industry, those who specialize in informatics can contribute to the development of meaningful clinical information. This can help with organizations in being able to make better diagnoses and reduce costs.

At my health care organization, we tend to use different digital platforms in order to transmit important patient data and information. Notably, we deploy electronic medical records and patient portals that patients are able to access themselves. It is important for nurses to be able to understand how these programs are able to communicate with one another. The nurse has to input information into our systems so that it translates appropriately to the patient portal, and vice versa. Since patients can also enter information of their own, it is equally vital for nurses to provide education to patients so that they can utilize the patient portal in a way that effectively communicates with our platforms as well. This ultimately allows for a much more seamless interaction of these digital informatics systems.

With that in mind, informatics in nursing encompasses a process that requires a practice-based theory of wisdom, which is further based on action (Matney et al., 2016). Clinical judgment can be attributed as the understanding that is reached when a nurse evaluates a process of observation, as well as an assessment of evident information. Nursing informatics makes up the practice that, overall, integrates nursing, its knowledge, and its information with details and communication technologies that help to encourage the health of individuals, their families, and communities.
