Over the past ten years, there has been a significant increase in research on the clinical benefits of Buddhist-derived interventions (BDIs). While much of the clinical focus has been on mindfulness meditation, there has also been growing scientific interest in interventions that incorporate other Buddhist concepts like compassion, loving-kindness, and the idea of "non-self." However, the rapid integration of Buddhism into mental health practices has sometimes led to the misuse of Buddhist terms and practices. Currently, there is no standardized system for effectively applying Buddhist principles in clinical settings. This paper aims to lay a strong foundation for the continued clinical use of Buddhist principles by offering: (i) clear and accurate explanations of Buddhist terms and principles that are now part of clinical practice literature, (ii) a summary of current methods for clinically applying BDIs, and (iii) an evaluation of the challenges in integrating BDIs into clinical practice. The paper concludes that BDIs could be effective treatments for various mental health issues, including mood disorders, substance abuse, and schizophrenia. However, more research and clinical trials are needed to solidify the evidence for existing interventions and to explore new treatment possibilities.
