Question

A 17-year-old pregnant client presents to a clinic for a routine pregnancy check. They report occasional use of alcohol, but also express interest in a substance use program. A parent of the pregnant person later calls the clinic and requests the clinic records because they are concerned that the 17-year-old is still drinking alcohol. What is the most appropriate action at this time? Discuss the case verbally with the parent of the minor child so they are aware of the plan of care. Decline to disclose any information to the parent. Inform the parent of the next scheduled pregnancy check so they can discuss the records with the client in person. Disclose information about the client to their parent because alcohol use during pregnancy is considered to be child abuse and is therefore an exception to privacy rules.
