How did the symptoms (psychopathology) of this client originate based on Existential theory? Case: Johanna was a 62-year-old, recently widowed, retired educator suffering from depression. She married in her mid-thirties while completing her MA degree in education. By her early-forties Johanna and her husband had a son and for the next few years or so they lived a "normal, happy life" Johanna said. Johanna reported during this time she felt fulfilled as she was taking care of her family, herself, and her career. Yet, over the last 15-years Johanna's symptoms of depression had progressively gotten worse. She endorsed feeling disconnected from friends and family, hopelessness, lack of interest in her hobbies, difficulty concentrating, and passive thoughts of death, She reported a history of feeling "lost, hopeless, and that life was meaningless" during her early 20s but not seeking mental health care to address these issues. When asked about her experiences during the last 15 years, Johanna endorsed family and career concerns. She reported her husband died approximately 6 years ago after a long battle with chronic health issues. She stated that between raising their son, helping her husband with healthcare, and trying to advance her career she began to put.
