Topic One - Lying
Carr presents a Kantian argument for the permissibility of lying. Is Carr's thesis, that lying in business is permissible, compatible with the Principle of Humanity and the Principle of Universalizability? Why or why not?
Essay Requirements - Your task is to present your thesis, along with a plausibly sound argument in its favor. Such an argument will take at least one major counterargument into consideration. In other words, explain your claim, what the reasons are for believing it, and provide good reasons to hold this belief.
The body of your essay is to be between 1,000 and 1,250 words. Header information (e.g., your name), footnotes, references, and bibliography do not count towards this limit.
Thesis: A good thesis...
(a) Clearly and directly states the claim to be defended in the paper, and
(b) Gives an idea of the primary argument that will be used to support the claim.
(c) Should be a claim with which someone could disagree.
"I will discuss restrictive immigration policies." is not a good thesis. Presumably, nobody will disagree that you'll do this in your paper.
Quality of Argumentation: Support all the premises of your arguments. "A" papers do more than provide quotations or single sentence statements. They support the premises with additional explanations, evidence, and/or examples.
Understanding: Does your paper demonstrate a clear understanding of the material? An "A" paper does not just offer a single sentence definition or a quote. It provides further clarification of key concepts in the definition, often by providing examples.
Organization and Clarity of Expression: In such a short paper, be direct and avoid redundancy. Explaining a point further is not redundant, but merely saying the same thing multiple times in different words is. Organize paragraphs so that they are only doing one thing. Most importantly, write in complete, grammatical sentences. Grammatical errors make it difficult to follow the points and arguments in a paper. Excessive grammatical errors will adversely affect your paper grade.
Completeness: Did you complete the entire assignment? One of the major reasons for grades of C- and below on previous assignments has been a failure to complete all parts of the assignment.
Textbooks to use for this paper: Honest Work (4thedition); Ciulla, Martin, and Solomon (eds.) The Elements of Moral Philosophy(8thedition); Rachels and Rachels any other sources would be good too.
