Question
Disengagement can be classified as a form of Avoidance conflict. In an Avoidance conflict, individuals or groups choose to ignore or avoid the conflict rather than confront it directly. This can manifest as disengagement, where one or more parties withdraw from the situation, become passive, or show indifference. While this approach might seem to reduce tension in the short term, it often allows the underlying issues to persist, potentially leading to greater conflict in the future. It's important to recognize and address this type of conflict to ensure that all parties' needs and concerns are acknowledged and addressed. Disengagement would typically fall under the category of Avoidance Conflict Management Style. According to Thomas and Kilmann's Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI), there are five main styles of conflict management: Competing, Collaborating, Compromising, Avoiding, and Accommodating. Disengagement, or withdrawal from the conflict, aligns with the Avoidance style. This style is characterized by diplomatically sidestepping, postponing, or withdrawing from a conflict situation. It's often used when the issue is trivial, when there's no chance of winning, when a delay is needed, or when a disruption would be costly. However, overuse of this style can lead to unresolved issues or feelings of dissatisfaction (MTD Management Training Courses, 2022); (Kilmann, 2023).
