Assignment Objective
The aim of this module is to explore the pre-contract roles and responsibilities of the quantity surveyor, acting for either the client of the contractor in building sector. The student will develop an understanding of the concepts of quantity surveying aspects of construction projects, and study quantity surveying roles, practice, and procedures. In particular, the module focuses on the varying role of Quantity Surveyor in economic, financial and contractual arrangements within a construction project.

Sarooj is part of Al Taher Group (ATG), a name that has been synonymous in the real estate sector, various engineering fields and the oil industry in the Sultanate since the 1970's. Sarooj has 43 years of experience working in Oman on major Infrastructure projects and oilfield services for leading operating companies such as Petroleum Development Oman (Shell), British Petroleum (BP), OOCEP, Occidental and Total and has been involved in most of the flagship infrastructure projects in Oman such as Musandam Gas Plant, Musandam Independent Power Plant, Nimr Water Treatment Plant, Shinas Port, Al Mouj Resort, Madha Road and Haima Airstrip.
Sarooj Construction Company has a professional design team and experienced workforce, many of whom have been with the company for many years. The Directors of the company appoint you create the pre- contract documentation and Bills of Quantities with relevant to NRM2 for the new construction project of a commercial building. Details of the commercial building could be decided by you. So that you are required to prepare the report covering the following aspects
a) Explore the Pre contract roles and responsibilities of quantity surveyor for construction of a commercial building.
b) Explain the general principles involved in the NRM2 for construction of a commercial building.
c) Explain the rules to be followed for the detailed measurement for construction of a commercial building.
d) Explain the general principles involved in the preparation of take off
e) Compare SMM7 and NRM2;Justify why NRM2 is best when compared with SMM7
f) Suggest the possible software available for preparing bill of quantities with pros and cons.
