CIVL 0016 Geotechnology Assignment - Middle East College, Oman
LEARNING OUTCOMES -
i. Solve geotechnical engineering problems and analyze and interpret data.
ii. Analyze the flow of water through soil via the use of flow nets and its effect below structures and through earth-dams; to use appropriate mathematical methods of analyzing geotechnical problems.
iii. Work with limited information to achieve an engineering approach to the solution of problems.
OBJECTIVES -
i. To carry out the analysis and design of geotechnical structures specified in the assessment brief with considerable emphasis on sustainability and safety requirements.
ii. To interpret the design outputs.
iii. To submit a technical report that follows a standard report protocol.
ASSIGNMENT TASKS (1500 words) - Answer all questions.
Q1: It is required to protect a road side soil slope in Mutrah, Muscat. After a thorough review of available options, it has been decided to support the soil slope by a cantilever retaining wall shown below. Provide the structural design of the retaining wall. Use Eurocode 2 Standard Code of Practice. Material properties: fck = 30 N/mm2 and fyk = 500 N/mm2. Critically appraise the suitability of your results. For individual soil data, refer to Moodle. All dimensions are in meters.

Q2: a) Design a rectangular pad foundation that carries a permanent load of 2000 kN (note: footing self-weight not included) and a variable load of 1000 kN. The corresponding moments are MGk = 300 kNm and MQk = 200 kNm. The allowable soil bearing capacity of the soil is 200 kN/m2. The space between the ground level and the bottom of the footing is to be covered with 1.5 m backfill with a unit weight of ------ kN/m3. Material properties are: C30 concrete and fyk = 500 N/mm2 reinforcement bars. For soil data, refer to Moodle.
Q3: Write a short reflective essay (600 words) on design philosophy of Embankment Dams that consists of design and construction, where safety (emphasis on seepage management, etc.) and sustainability (materials selection) are properly addressed.
