CIVL 0007 Civil Engineering Practice Assignment - Middle East College, Oman
Module Learning Outcomes - The following LOs are achieved by the student by completing the assignment successfully
1) Explain the engineer's role in creating and maintaining a sustainable environment.
2) Apply risk assessments in the context of construction design and management regulations.
Assignment Objective - To provide an understanding of application of risk assessment with regards to health and safety in construction and also to incorporate a thorough understanding of requirements and important factors of an engineer's role to create and maintain sustainable environment via a real-life scenario project.
Major objectives of this assignment is thorough investigation of risk assessment including, identification of activities, hazards, levels of risk, people at risk, control measures, etc. To make students understand the extent of local sustainable projects in Oman which are constructed up to the standards defined in Oman standards/reliable literature with regards to sustainable development in construction and built environment.
Assignment Tasks -
1. Students are advised to investigate on various applications and significance of health and safety, risk management and sustainability aspects to be followed for the construction of a commercial building/residential building.
2. Student must select any ONE case-study of a construction project that is recognized to have applied sustainability concepts in design and construction.
3. Students shall complete THREE short online MOOCs mentioned below. Student will attain certificates after successful completion of these two HSE courses and student must submit certificates in the individual report appropriately. For sustainability MOOC student must submit an evidence of course completion [mail/screenshot of course progress etc.]
4. Prepare an Individual report according to report sections mentioned below.
Report Sections:
1. Introduction [100 words]
Student shall start with a brief overview and introduction to the report. Student must discuss the significance of H&S, risk management and sustainability in the present world and review the current situation in Oman including challenges, concerns and needs related to this topic in international and local level.
2. Health and Safety in construction [200 words]
Students shall identify any FOUR hazards in the construction project. In line with the selected hazards need to explain consequences of hazards take place as a risk. Student must evaluate the likelihood and severity of risks and also recommend relevant control Measure (CM) to reduce, level of risk
3. The role of an engineer towards sustainability - [100 words]
Student is required to explore various factors relevant to present situations and local requirements in Oman including environment, economy, life-style, etc. Focus shall be towards the roles and responsibilities of engineers in maintain sustainability in construction.
4. Case study - Eco House - Oman - [200 words]
Student must select any ONE case-study of a construction project that is recognized to have applied sustainability concepts in design and construction. GTU- ECOHAUS (or) HCT Green-Nest (or) Eco house - SQU, Oman [select any one]. Student must briefly introduce the case-study and then reflect on knowledge gained through scholarly study.
5. Reflection from MOOC courses - [200 words]
6. Conclusion - [100 words]
Student shall provide overall recommendations through the knowledge pursued through this coursework. Student must discuss outcomes of this coursework through the knowledge gained from various tasks of this study.
