CIVL 0003 Civil Engineering Construction - Middle East College
Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate understanding of the common methods of civil engineering construction.
Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate understanding of the capabilities and limits of civil engineering equipment.
Assignment Objective
The major objectives of this coursework assignment are:
• to understand common construction methods of civil engineering construction.
• to be familiar with capabilities of plant and their limitations of usage in Oman.
Assignment Tasks
Student has to be considered him/herself as a site personnel of a construction company in Oman. In this task student need to identify required dewatering techniques according to the site conditions. Additionally, student should handle the responsibility of managing construction plant at site and basic foundation design of a G+3 storey residential building in Al Mabelah.
Part 1. Ground water control methods:
From the analysis of site and soil investigation reports, it was observed that ground consists of water below at the depth of 7m. The ground condition is not suitable for the well point system. At any cost, water has to be dewatered at the construction site and there is not restriction on amount to be spent to implement the required dewatering method but must be an effective method to dewater which can substantially increase the rate of water extraction in cohesive soils, such as clay.
According to the ground conditions, student should recommend any TWO temporary dewatering methods to lower the ground water table which are best suitable to given situations of the construction site.
Part 2. Output of the construction plant team:
It is required to excavate 10,000m3 of soil and the material is ‘SANDY CLAY'. Find out bulking factor and bucket fill factor that should be applied.
(Table 5.3 Bulk density and Bulking factors - Dene, R. W 1996, Earthworks, Pg:105) (Table 5.4 - typical bucket fill factors Dene, R. W 1996, Earthworks, Pg:105) Available construction plant for this project is:
a) 360° excavator with a bucket of heaped capacity 0.XX m3 & typical cycle time is half a minute.
b) Trucks with XX m3 capacity which require 2 minutes to position itself under the 360° excavator (positioning time).
Lorry work cycle is:
Lorry work cycle (excluding Loading time of truck)
|
Moving off site
|
1 minute
|
Travel 2.5 km (say) each way (at 30 km/hr.)
|
10 minutes
|
Tipping time
|
3 minutes
|
According to the data and site circumstances student should:
i. Calculate the output of the 360° excavator per week, assuming a normal working week of 40 hours which includes down time of 10 minutes in every hour.
ii. Determine the ‘Plant Team' and ‘Number of Weeks' required for the removal of 10000m3 of soil.
Part 3. Capacity calculation of a compaction plant:
A self- propelled single drum ‘Vibrating Roller, has:
Roller width 2.50 m;
Mass per wheel is XXXX kg/m width of roller Speed X.X km/hr.;
Type of soil which has to be compacted is "Cohesive soil (clay)"
From Compaction Specification; (Table 5.5 Compaction specification-Earthworks, Pg:111]
Hence students should:
i. Determine minimum number of passes and maximum depth of compacted layer in mm.
ii. Determine the volume of soil handled per week by this Vibrating Roller based on limitations and capabilities provided.
Part 4. Effective length and Allowable pile load.
From the structural design it is identified that the load on pile is around XXX kN in clay of average cohesion XXX kN/m2. There are three metres of soft peat above the clay. It is recommended to be a friction bearing pile, in the clay with some form of plastic sleeve over the top three metres to prevent negative skin friction.
In line with the data student should:
i. Determine allowable pile load, Using Skempton's formula. Where, α = Adhesion factor (assume 0.48 for clay) and Factor of safety as 2.5
ii. Determine the diameter of the pile (200mm - 400mm), actual length (8m - 30m) and effective length (5m - 27m) of a pile to cover the applied load.
