Civil Rights, Human Rights, and the Feminization of Poverty United Nations. When visiting the UN and HRW websites, explore their contents more broadly. On the UN website be sure to access the pdf file for the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights." On the HR W website, study as much of the report on the US as you can. Students interested to explore other countries and/or continents may do so, and incorporate those findings into their thinking. Study all these items, keeping a Dialectical Journal as you do. If you have never used dialectical journaling, do a quick google search to get an introduction. Besides overviews and explanations, you will also find templates for formatting. Students may utilize a small composition notebook for this assignment, or compose on the computer. Use the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" and the "Declaration of Independence" from our first U.S Experience Praxis Activity assignment and adapt them together for a "U.S. Declaration of Human Rights to End Poverty." Students inspired to think beyond the boundaries of the U.S. are invited to do so (i.e., what would a "Declaration of Human Rights to End Poverty in the Americas" look like? Who and what would it need to take into consideration?). As you creatively think about adapting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

Consider seriously the limitations of the civil rights framework that has shaped much of the approach to claims of inclusion, representation, and rights in U.S. history. Consider the matter of the "silent Constitution," as explained by Patricia Smith, including her claims about the contribution of the "silent Constitution" to the "feminization of poverty" witnessed in the 20th century. It may be helpful to examine the essays by Lynne Curry and Jan Lewis which are part of the "Reproductive Justice Matters" assignment (the next one coming up). Consider the rhetorical strategy of the "Declaration" as an aspirational medium and as a device for communicating a vision of the kind of world we desire to create but do your best to work beyond the simply aspirational to produce a solutions-driven appeal. Stylistically, you may work with the U document, but more updated formats are welcome (i.e., can a U.S. Declaration of Human Rights be formatted as an infographic? A concept map? A video? etc.)
