LAB 1: Scour around Bridge Pier

OBJECTIVE
To study the effect of flow shallowness, y/B and time, t of bridge pier on the depth of scour protected by the tetrahedral frames.

PROCEDURE
1. Insert bridge pier model at 1.25 m from upstream of the flume.
2. Record the scour depth ds at different times for about 30 minutes at which time equilibrium scour depth may be assumed to have reached.
3. Measure the discharge.
4. Repeat steps (1) to (3) for five different flow shallowness.
5. Repeat steps (1) to (3) for three different countermeasures (gabion filled with stone, clothing and plastic).

LAB 2: Coastal Protection

AIM

To study the effect of wavelength, wave height and wave period of coastal protection using artificial and natural coastal protection.

OBJECTIVE

• Study the wave reduction by mangrove forests and artificial protection measures;
• Develop and conduct a process to model and quantify wave reduction for mangrove forests in conjunction with artificial protection measures;
• Determine the effectiveness of the hybrid protection measures on wave reduction.
