Background Information: In March of 2024, you are hired by MoDean's Brewing Company, an up-and-coming craft brewing company in Pennsylvania with a production of 9,500 beer barrels per year and annual operating costs of $600,000. The brewery has plans to open a second (larger) brewery with a brewpub and a bottling line that will triple its capacity when it opens and has room to expand well beyond that. The owners want the second location to be much more efficient and greener than their current facility. Like most start-ups, they have been more focused on product quality than on optimizing operations. Recently, MoDean's Brewing Company was cited and fined by the local POTW for not having a discharge permit. Lots of local craft breweries and other food related businesses have been springing up in the sewershed and the total suspended solids (TSS) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) of these businesses' effluent has been wreaking havoc on the city's wastewater treatment system.
