CIS047-2 Circuit Analysis & Signal Processing - University of Bedfordshire
CW-Port: Portfolio
Learning outcome 1: Demonstrates detail knowledge of well stablished circuit theories and concepts, and evaluate their applications using complementary tools and techniques.
Learning outcome 2: Apply various circuit analysis principles and techniques to analyse the behavior of electrical circuits, signals and systems using appropriate software tools.
This assignment is designed to develop and assess your ability to apply circuit analysis theory to analyse and design electrical circuits using appropriate circuit simulation software. It is an individual work that results in an individual written report that includes your detailed methods, calcul ations and screenshots of the software simulation .
Part A: Circuit analysis
Question 1: Consider circuit in Figure 1
Figure 1
a) Calculate the value of R for maximum power transfer to R.
b) Determine the maximum power of R.
c) Use Multisim simulation to prove your calculations.
Question 2: Consider circuit in Figure 2.
a) Find the mathematical expressions for the transient behaviour of the voltage VC and the current IC following the closing of the switch.
b) Sketch the waveforms of VC and the current IC.
c) Implement this circuit in Multisim and apply transient simulation.
d) Compare your theoretical results and simulation results; justify your results if necessary.
Figure 2
Question 3: Consider circuit in Figure 3.
You need to select the last three digits of your student ID as the frequency (Hz) of the input signal.
Figure 3
a. Assuming the inductor reactance XL = 200? compute the values of reactive elements.
b. The total impedance of the circuit.
c. The total current through resistor Rs.
d. Implement the circuit inMultisim and compare simulated values with your calculations.
e. Demonstrate voltage signals for all elements in the circuit; justify your results.
Question 4:
The bandwidth of a series resonant circuit is 400 Hz.
a) If the resonant frequency is 4000 Hz, what is the value of Qs?
b) If R=10 ?, what is the value of XL at resonance?
c) Find the inductance L and capacitance C of the circuit at resonance.
d) Implement your circuit in Multisim and using appropriate tools, demonstrate and justify your circuit design.
Part B: Power factor correction
A small manufacturing workshop requested you to investigate its power consumpti on and to design a possible power factor correction option to improve their network. They have a series load including inductive load due to motors and heating load.
18kW heating load is pure resistive and 24 kVA inductive load has a lagging power of factor of 0.6.
a) If the supply is a 1000V signal with 60 Hz frequency, suggest a capacitive load to increase the power factor to 0.95.
b) Calculate the current drawn from the supply before and after power factor correction.
c) Justify your design by implementing the circuit diagram of this network in Multisim, before and after power factor correction.
What to submit:
A formal written report (circa 2000 words) with all the answers and detailed/expla ine d solutions to each problem, and screenshots demonstrating your design and simulation results.
