Writing an essay
The purpose of an essay is to present a logical, reasoned argument in response to a specific question.
An effective structure helps your argument to unfold clearly to the reader.
Structure
Title, Abstract, a clear Introduction, main body including Discussion, and Conclusion
(Max Length 10 A4 pages, excluding references)
Include figures, schemes, tables.
Structure: Introduction
Relevant literature must be studied, and the knowledge acquired must be presented through the selection and description of sources.
A concise, engaging, and well-written introduction will start your readers off thinking highly of you, your analytical skills, your writing, and your paper. This impression is especially important when the audience you are trying to reach (your instructor) will be grading your work. You must capture your reader's interest.
Your introduction should give your reader a sense of the kinds of information you will use to support your argument along with the organization of the body paragraphs.
Think of the introduction as a road map for your reader to follow. Once the introduction has been read, your reader should not be surprised with any information found in the body paragraphs.
Structure: Main Body
Develop argument point by point. Put forward the reasons that support the argument you declared in your introduction
Merely summarizing the content of the literature is not enough, but scientifically sound arguments must be developed in essay.
Student must question, explain, analyze, compare and evaluate the arguments put forth in the sources trying to develop one's own perspective.
Structure: Conclusions and Perspectives
Summarise the main themes, reminding the reader what you have covered and how you have answered the question and the reasons that support your argument, with no new information.
Make it clear why those conclusions are important or significant.
In the last sentence, sum up your argument very briefly, linking it to the title.
Figures, schemes, tables
Include them! They help the reader to follow and engage with the topic.
Make your own! Structures and tables should be redrawn.
When redraw structures pay attention to size (be consistent along the essay), bond length and angles, stereochemistry, sub-script and upper-script.
If you take figures from literature, make sure that you include the source.
Good quality high resolution.....not blurry... not so little that it is impossible to read text.
Always accompanied by caption e.g Fig.1 which should be mentioned in the text.
Be carefully with numbering compounds!
References
References needs to be from primary literature (original works like research).
Do not use too many books, review or websites.
Must be formatted correctly. Choose one style from a journal and be consistent.
