A 75-year-old woman was brought to the emergency department by her son. The woman lives alone with her pets. He found her shaking and feverish and complaining of chest pain. At the emergency department her medical history revealed she had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The woman smokes a pack of cigarettes per day and has been smoking since she was 16 years old. Blood was collected for a CBC and blood cultures, and sputum was sent for culture. Her leukocyte count was elevated, showing a predominance of neutrophils and bands. The sputum Gram's stain showed many WBCs and many gram-negative coccobacilli resembling Haemophilus spp. The woman was admitted and treated with azithromycin.
