Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, can be defined as a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It can further be classified into two groups: Chronic bronchitis, defined as inflammation of the bronchioles of the lungs with a productive cough of more than three (3) months occurring within 2 years, and Emphysema, defined as damage to the alveoli leading to the loss of elasticity in the lungs, preventing it from expanding and recoiling properly during breathing. Living with COPD can be very challenging. The article I chose is Social Determinants of Advanced Chronic Respiratory Interventions: A Scoping Review. Some social determinants include income, education, occupation, housing, access to healthcare, and broader societal factors such as discrimination and poverty. People living in lower-income and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities are at a higher risk for developing COPD. This is caused by exposure to environmental risk factors such as biomass fuel use, smoking tobacco, lack of access to affordable healthcare, and limited access to education and information about managing their disease process. In the intensive care unit, when we receive patients who have a history of COPD, they are always challenging to manage on the ventilator because of compliance.
