In 2006, "health care expenditures reached $2.2 trillion, which translates to $7,421 per person or 16.2 percent of the nation's Gross Domestic Product. The health-spending share of GDP reached 16.2 percent, up from 16.0 percent in 2006" (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2009, para. 1).
