Question

Christianity has taken on many forms since its inception. Some of the ways of practicing Christianity have come into conflict with one another. Between 1500 and 1800 there was almost constant warfare in Europe over the different kinds of Christianity. Given that Christians see Jesus as the Prince of Peace, how could Christians go to war with each other over their own religion? Choose a current example of conflict within a religion today and discuss why followers of the same religion are in conflict. You might consider some of the following as you consider the issue, but you are encouraged to discuss the problem through the prism of your choice. Is there a common interpretation of sacred religious texts? How different are the core values among the factions? Is the conflict really about religious beliefs, or is it something else such as power, economics, tradition, regional differences, et cetera? Who stands to gain and what are they really achieving?
