Question: The appointment surgery scheduling at ABC hospital examines patients who make their appointments well ahead of time. Cardiothoracic surgery follow-up visits, or patients needing annual checkups can be given as examples. These varying lead times allow the healthcare practitioners' day to be fully booked. However, it is highly possible that these routine patients will not show up; probably due to forgetfulness or subsequent schedule conflicts. To avoid the idle time that would result from these no-shows, practitioners may choose to overbook appointments. Further, individuals may choose to call and cancel their appointment, as well. In such cases, overbooking may become useful for ensuring full capacity utilization.
