ASSIGNMENT
Note: All dimensions are in mm unless stated otherwise.
A steel frame is shown in Figure 1. The steel used is ASTM A572 Grade 50. It consists of two span and braced by an arrangement of trusses at the right side of the frame. Support reactions for the frame is shown in Figure 2. Shear force diagram and bending moment diagram of the beams are shown in Figure 3. Figure 4 shows axial force diagram, shear force and bending moment diagram of column AB and EC. The reactions and internal forces diagram are required for the design of the column, beam and connections.
a) Choose the lightest W-shape for column AB, this column is supported laterally at node A and B, consider P- effect;
b) Choose the lightest W-shape for beam BC, this beam is supported laterally at node B and C;
c) Design bolted double angle connection for node C of beam BC, use ASTM 325 bolts,bearing type connection with thread intercepted shear plane;
d) Design welded double angle connection for node C of beam BC, use fillet welds with Xu = 490 MPa.
e) In a short paragraph define the objectives of learning designs of different steel members/connections as asked in part a), b), c), and d). Your answer should also clearly state how you will meet the design safety/code limits.
