Question

In 2022 the Biden administration (current US presidential administration) proposed adding 20 billion into Child Welfare systems for 'Kinship Care'. Adding this money the system set aside for relatives that step in and take care of children that would otherwise be set into the foster care system is a double-edged sword. While that money would absolutely help relatives take care of children, for example grandparents on a fixed income, or family members that already have to make ends meet with their own children. It also could add benefits that will attract those wishing to take advantage of the system, children could end up placed with family members that are less than fit or abusive/neglectful, simply because there is a check involved. There are solutions to consider such as stricter vetting processes for care-takers, regular and random home-checks, or benefits coming in forms already established like WIC, food stamps, and government assisted housing. While it might not prevent all of the negatives, it could be a step in the right direction for giving further assistance to those willing to step in when they are needed most.
