Question

A Child Protective Services (CPS) worker has been told by her administrative supervisors that to ensure that all clients at the agency are seen, she must reduce the amount of time she spends with all of her clients. Her counseling supervisor, however, realizes that some par- ents and their children need particular attention and any reduction in time might leave these children at risk for harm. This very real scenario leaves the human service professional (CPS worker) in a quandary. Does she adhere to the edict of her administrative supervisors and spend less time with all of her clients, which opens up the possibility that a child in a particularly high- risk family might be harmed? Or does she listen to the counseling supervisor, who is more concerned with the high-risk clients, and spend additional time with these clients? What are the pluses and minuses of each situa- tion? What would you do in this situation? Can this situa- tion get resolved?
