Betty Turner, a mild-mannered woman in her late forties, worked at Best Packaging. One day at work, she and two other employees were told to pour a dangerous chemical from a larger container into smaller containers. After they asked for rubber gloves and goggles, a supervisor sent for the equipment. In the meantime, Turner and the other two employees sat around waiting for the safety equipment, contrary to a work rule requiring employees to remain occupied at all times. After learning that the women had stopped working, Charlie Foulmouth, the workers’ immediate supervisor, started screaming at Turner and the other two workers, calling them “mother_____s,” accusing them of sitting on their “f___ing asses,” and threatening to “show them the door.” At this, Turner became upset and began to experience pain in her chest, pounding in her head, and difficulty in breathing. Her family physician met her at the hospital, where he admitted her, fearing that she was having a heart attack. She was later diagnosed as having had an acute anxiety reaction. Turner later sued her employer for intentional infliction of emotional distress. Would she be successful? Explain why or why not.
