Case Study 1: Mark
You are working in an Education and care services as educator. As a part of your duties, you assist children daily with their breakfast. Mark one of the children is not happy at the breakfast table. You notice that he is quite angry on your new educator. You approached Mark table and saw bacon on Mark plate. Mark is Jewish by religion. It's clearly written on Mark meal plan that he does not eat pork as per his religious needs. Mark is very strict about his religion and religious practices which he follows at the education and care services.

Case study 2: Ms. Darlo Chao
Darlo Chao was born in China and recently migrated to Australia with her parents. Her parents want to complain about an educator because of few recent incidents. Parents are not able to communicate with the staff on duty because of their limited command on English. The educator on duty has asked parents to engage an interpreter to ensure that all details relating to the incidents were accurately recorded. The parents refused the offer of an interpreter because they thought that they would be charged for this service. The educator, not knowing why the parents was refusing an interpreter, asked the parents to wait and called an interpreter on the telephone. After a brief conversation with the interpreter, the educator understood why the offer of an interpreter had been refused and was able to assure the parents and child that she would not have to pay for the interpreter. With the help of the interpreter, the parents and child could record all incidents and the educator on duty was able to collect the necessary information to investigate further.

Case Study 3: Community operated long day care
A community-operated long day care service is proud of the very active family and staff participation at all levels of service delivery. The management believes it is because of the respectful interactions and the rapport based on shared decision-making principles, a deep understanding and empathy for each other's cultural perspectives and the willingness to have a flexible approach.
A recent celebration commemorating the service's twenty-five years of operation highlighted the positive manner that the service community negotiated roles and responsibilities and effectively delivered the planned outcomes. The action plan, which included the allocation of responsibilities and the determination of timeframes and required resources, was developed by the appointed steering committee who kept families and staff informed throughout the process. Elders were also consulted to ensure correct cultural aspects were incorporated.

Case study 5: Ann
Ann is mother of Rita, a girl in the early childhood care centre. Last week the centre celebrated the "Father's Day" and Mary an educator noticed that Ann brought her partner Daniela with her.
Mary found this absurd and asked Ann if they were lesbians. Ann denied that they were because she was concerned that Rita would receive a lesser standard of care. However, one morning the care worker noticed they had both been kissing while dropping off Rita. The care worker refused to provide care to Rita. Ann was confused and distressed and Daniela thought about ringing the service provider to make a report, but she didn't know what she should say.

Case study 6: Dyan
Dyan (pseudonym), an intersex child, was born with both male and female genitalia and hormones. Dyan was adopted as a toddler, but a few months prior to adoption (at 16 months of age), the Department of Social Services and a group of physicians decided that the child should undergo sex-assignment surgery, choosing the female gender.
The family began to raise the child as a girl named Rachel (pseudonym), eventually enrolling her when she was 4 years old at a child care centre. As child was reaching five, male hormones became more dominant, the child began to identify as a boy. His parents supported him when, he came to identify himself as Dyan. This meant that, after knowing him for several months as Rachel, Dyan's educators and other children were asked to regard him as a boy and call him Dyan.
